This course examines gender and sexuality in the Nordic countries through the lens of literature written by women. Students will study novels, short stories, and essays from the nineteenth century until today and cover a variety of prose genres such as dystopia, sci-fi, magical realism, gothic novella and historical realism. Films and theoretical texts that explore issues of gendered identities will supplement the readings. Additionally students will examine the historical, social, and political contexts of this literature and learn how it has played an important role in effecting social and political change.

The Norwegian Multi Ethnolect (NMET) is used by linguists to define an emerging, distinct variety of language which reflects the evolving nature of Norwegian society. Its origin is the immigrant youth in the eastern parts of Oslo, most of whom identify as Muslim, but has become very common in all parts of Norway. While it is a form of Norwegian language, the NMET can be challenging for language learners to understand at first. However, with exposure and training, the NMET is quite accessible. Together we will create an online linguistic database of MET and curriculum modules for Norwegian language learners. Prerequisite: NORW 253. w/ Professor Kari Lie Dorer
